Tips to Make Family Photos Less Stressful (from a mom who gets it)

As a family photographer (and a parent), I completely understand how stressful family photos can feel! I have 2 kids of my own and trust me when I say that getting them ready, keeping them happy, and hoping they cooperate at the same time feels impossible most of the time. That’s exactly why I focus on making family photo sessions fast, relaxed, and pressure-free, especially for moms!

Here are my best tips to help your family photos feel easier (and maybe even enjoyable) for all!

1. Plan Ahead (But Keep Things Simple)

Complicated plans only add stress. You already have enough going on so make sure to choose the date, time, and location in advance! Pick a place that’s easy to get to so no one feels rushed on the day of. Don’t worry- I have a whole guide of locations for you to choose from!

2. Don’t Expect Perfection

My own kids have taught me that perfection isn’t realistic. Embrace the giggles, silly faces, and unexpected moments. Even the “chaos” is part of your story. The perfect photos aren’t about looking/being flawless- they’re about the genuine connections within your family.

3. Find a Photographer Who is Great with Kids!

Like me! I will ALWAYS take the time to try to connect with your kids. I’ll ask them questions, get on their level, and I don’t mind being a little silly with them. It might take a little time but when children feel comfortable and trust their photographer, they relax faster and are more willing to engage naturally. This makes the entire session smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Comfortable Outfits = Better Photos

Attire plays a HUGE part in confidence! My biggest tip is to choose outfits that everyone can move in easily and that they feel good wearing. Do not buy outfits that are outside of your/your kids comfort zones or something that you/they would never wear again. Your photos should look and feel like your family! And I promise, when children are comfortable, they’re happier- and happier kids mean more natural smiles and fewer struggles.

5. Let Your Photographer Handle the Chaos

Because I experience it at home, nothing surprises me during sessions. I actually expect the chaos! Big emotions, short attention spans, and silly behavior are all completely normal and do not phase me at all. Please do not apologize or stress! I stay calm and can redirect so you can focus on being with your family. When their parents feel relaxed and supported, the kids usually follow.

6. Bring Small Distractions or Snacks

Bring quick snacks, especially for younger kids. I recommend treats that are easy to hide between shots and won’t stain clothes! One personal favorite? A can of whipped cream! A quick spray of whipped cream in the mouth feels like a treat, makes kids laugh, and keeps things fun without slowing the session down.

A favorite toy, bubbles, your favorite music, or a simple game can help keep kids engaged without overwhelming them.

6. End on a Positive Note

Plan a small reward after the photo session, like a treat or a fun family activity! This gives everyone something to look forward to and keeps the mood upbeat until the end.

As a photographer and a parent with my own strong-willed kids, I truly understand how hard it can be… BUT… family photos don’t have to be overwhelming. My goal is to make the process easy, fast, and as stress-free as possible so you walk away with photos you love and a positive experience to remember!

XOXO,

Bailee
